AT&T fiber is ultra-fast as it provides high-speed internet at a reasonable price with a guarantee on reliability. The AT&T fiber offers consistent and stable connectivity to all your household devices. This internet plan comes with a combination of a Wi-Fi router and a modem, which is delivered when installing the fiber internet in your residence. However, you do not have to use the router supplied; you can use your own router with AT&T Fiber. This article will show you how to use your own router with AT&T Fiber or AT&T U-verse for flawless internet connectivity.

How do I use AT&T Fiber with my own Router?

Currently, AT&T does not allow its subscriber’s sole reliance on a third-party router; however, it is possible to use another router besides the one provided by AT&T. AT&T allows you to use their router with a third-party one, but you need to apply configuration settings to make it happen. Two routers from different companies can cause disorder since they each have separate networks that may not be able to interact with each other.

Bridge Mode configuration can be used in the configuration of the AT&T router to a third-party router. The Bridge Mode allows the internet user to use one network for both routers and prevents performance problems. This configuration will disable the Network Address Translation (NAT) attribute on the modem and averts conflict by the IP address converting the router into a DHCP server, enabling you to use your own Router with AT&T U-verse. Keep the gateway provided by AT&T for their modems and router, however, the configuration of the AT&T gateway is still possible when you immobilize AT&T gateway’s wireless network.

However, there are limitations when you set up a bridge mode as the attainment of a true bridge mode is not possible through an AT&T gateway. There is an alternative such as IP passthrough that provides a decent configuration. But, using the passthrough mode places you at risk of malware as it deprives you of the firewall protection that AT&T fiber gateway provides.

Depending on the modem or router you are using, you have several configuration options. The device may either be a 2Wire/Pace or Motorola NVG 510 or 589. To know your device, connect your PC to the AT&T modem or router using an Ethernet cable, and follow relevant instructions.

The Motorola NVG 510 AD 58 has Three Configurations

DHCPS-Fixed

This configuration is more suitable if you need to connect several devices to an AT&T gateway because it allocates the DHCP server to a particular MAC address.

• Use your PC’s browser to directly connect to the AT&T gateway
• After you open the browser, use http://192.168.1.254 to log into AT&T fiber
• Go to the gateway GUI page and select Firewall, then select IP Passthrough just below the tab
• Key in the Device Access Code when prompted to do so
• At the Allocation menu, select the Passthrough mode
• The Passthrough mode has a drop-down, choose the DHCPS-dynamic option and save
• Restart the PC and reset the third-party router

DHCPS-Dynamic

The device that first requests a DHCP address from the LAN is assigned a WAN IP address by the AT&T server.

• Enter http://a92.168.1.254 in your browser after connecting it the AT&T fiber gateway
• The gateway’s GUI page has a firewall tab; click on it and choose IP Passthrough below the Firewall tab
• Input the Device Access Code when asked to
• Select the Passthrough option on the Allocation Mode menu
• Then select DHCPS-dynamic
• Save and restart when prompted
• Refresh the network when you reset the third-party device to receive the new public IP address device

Manual

If you want to configure manually, you first need to get in touch with AT&T support and then obtain a subnet mask, WAN IP address, and default gateway. But, all information that pertains to the gateway is delivered through DHCP, there is a possibility that your device will not connect until you perform an update of your AT&T fiber modem or router manually in the settings.

• Log on to http://192.168.1.254 on the PC through your browser when connected to AT&T modem or router
• Select IP Passthrough on the Firewall tab
• Enter your Device Access Code if necessary
• Select the Passthrough option on the drop-down menu displaying Allocation Mode
• Select the manual option and save, then restart the gateway to complete the process
• Then configure the third-party device manually with the subnet mask, WAP IP address, and default gateway provided by customer care.

Default Server

There is also the option of a Default Server Mode as it allows the AT&T fiber gateway to relay IP traffic to a particular device on LAN. By doing this, the router will still use a LAN IP address in place of the WAN IP assigned in the Default Server Mode.

• Log on to http://192.168.1.254 on the PC through your browser when connected to AT&T modem or router
• Select IP Passthrough on the Firewall tab
• Enter your Device Access Code if necessary
• Select the Default Server option found in the Allocation Mode menu
• Enter your device’s IP address in the address field of the Default Server
• Save and restart to complete the process

Follow these instructions for 2Wire/Pace Gateways

These gateways use a Passthrough mode known as DMZ plus mode. You have to connect your device to AT&T fiber gateway and configure the device to obtain an IP address through DHCP.

• Log on to http://192.168.1.254 on the PC through your browser when connected to AT&T modem or router
• Go to the GUI page, select settings, Firewall, Applications, Pinholes, and DMZ in that order
• On the Select a Computer option, select the name of the third-party device or select its IP address to set it in the DMZplus mode
• Select Allow all Applications – DMZplus mode, radio button and save

The instructions above will assist you if you want to use your own Router with AT&T fiber. You do not have to use the router or modem that is supplied by AT&T if you do not like the way it works.
